AEGEAN CENTER
In the fall of 2014 I studied abroad at the Aegean Center for the Fine Arts. For the first three weeks we toured Northern Italy viewing the famous artwork of the Italian Renaissance. For the next three months we took classes on an island in Greece. The instruction was very strict and relied on classic and, occasionally, ancient painting techniques. The emphasis of these classes was placed on skill and the ability to accurately depict objects and figures. While my art does not reflect this training, it was essential in developing my technique. The Aegean Center taught me how to carefully observe the world around me, and helped to develop my technical skills so that I could depict these objects with extreme realism. Now I have the ability to choose when and how I want to use these skills. I know that I have the ability to paint leaves and flowers more accurately, but I have chosen to represent them in a way that is unique. The Aegean Center technical training has allowed me to make these decisions with more confidence.
